چکیده

The Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is responsible for the processing and validation of oceanic optical property retrievals from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). A major goal of this activity is the production of a continuous ocean color time-series spanning the mission life of these sensors from September 1997 to the present time. This paper presents an overview of the calibration and validation strategy employed to optimize and verify sensor performance for retrieval of upwelling radiances just above the sea surface. Substantial focus is given to the comparison of results over the common mission life-span of SeaWiFS and the MODIS flying on the Aqua platform, covering the period from July of 2002 through December of 2004. It will be shown that, through consistent application of calibration and processing methodologies, a continuous ocean color time-series can be produced from two very different spaceborne sensors.

Adjustment of ocean color sensor calibration through multi-band statistics.

The band-by-band vicarious calibration of on-orbit satellite ocean color instruments, such as SeaWiFS and MODIS, using ground-based measurements has significant residual uncertainties. This paper applies spectral shape and population statistics to tune the calibration of the blue bands against each other to allow examination of the interband calibration and potentially provide an analysis of ca...

Sampling biases in MODIS and SeaWiFS ocean chlorophyll data

Although modern ocean color sensors, such as MODIS and SeaWiFS, are often considered global missions, in reality it takes many days, even months, to sample the ocean surface enough to provide complete global coverage. The irregular temporal sampling of ocean color sensors can produce biases in monthly and annual mean chlorophyll estimates. We quantified the biases due to sampling using data ass...

Water Quality Monitoring of Large European Lakes Using Meris Full Resolution Data

In order to complement present water quality monitoring of large lakes, we have attempted to make use of satellite imagery. In addition to ocean color sensors SeaWiFS and MODIS, lately MERIS images also became available. Here we analyze 18 almost cloud free full resolution atmospherically corrected MERIS images over the large European lakes Vättern, Vänern and Peipsi, where water type ranges fr...

Bridging between SeaWiFS and MODIS for continuity of chlorophyll-a concentration assessments off Southeastern China

Chlorophyll-a (Chl) concentration in the Taiwan Strait (TWS) and in the South China Sea (SCS) was estimated using time series of satellite data collected with the MODIS/Aqua and SeaWiFS instruments, and validated with in situ measurements from three cruises conducted in winter and summer 2004. For Chl between 0.1 and 10mg m , both SeaWiFS and MODIS agreed well with in situ data. Errors for turb...

Moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer ocean color polarization correction.

The polarization correction for the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments on the Terra and Aqua satellites is described. The focus is on the prelaunch polarization characterization and on the derivation of polarization correction coefficients for the processing of ocean color data. The effect of the polarization correction is demonstrated. The radiances at the top of...
